BACKGROUND
(WORK IN PROGRESS) Rickard grew up the son of Johann and Wilhelmina, unmarked members of House Tharashk. Having inherited the position from his own father, Johann was tasked with upholding business relations with House Cannith in Cyre. This was not a pleasant post, there was not much love between the two houses, but as they say, business is business.

The Tharashk holdings in Cyre were not large, but they were befitting for a dragonmarked house. Rickard was raised with all the privileges due his family’s station. Johann planned to groom his son to take over the duties of their branch of the family, but when Rickard manifested the Mark of Finding in his early teens, plans changed.

It had been several generations since the last Mark of Finding appeared in Rickard’s bloodline, and his father was not willing to let it go to waste. This was a chance to finally elevate his family within House Tharashk. A tutor of the arcane was hired to instruct Rickard so that he could hopefully capitalize upon his new found abilities.

His name was Haverton Grutman, a stern looking man in his middle years. He arrived in the dead of night, amidst a storm that was talked about for years to come. In no time, Rickard’s training had begun. He was a natural talent, the simple cantrips came quickly and soon his studies turned to more serious forms of magic.

It was around this time that Rickard’s mother grew ill. It was nothing at first, the occasional faint feeling, some nausea. But as Rickard’s training continued, the illness continued to progress. The healers of House Jorasco could find nothing wrong her, and the condition continued to worsen. Haverton encouraged Rickard to use his mark to find an answer to her illness.

Rickard dove deeper into his studies, devoting most of his waking hours searching for an answer. As things grew more desperate, a solution was presented to Rickard. Haverton offered to give Rickard the power he needed, but at a cost. He would have to make a pact with the darkness that resides inside all men. With his mother on the brink, Rickard jumped at the chance to save her.

It wasn’t until he spoke the words to create the pact that Rickard was able to see the events that had been transpiring with any clarity. The darkness saw something in him, and offered the answers he sought. His father had hired Haverton to train Rickard, but at the price of his mother’s soul. His tutor had been slowly draining the life from his mother over the months of study.

Rickard turned on his tutor, who must have realized what happened, because he vanished into the shadows. Rickard ran across the estate, seeking to target his vengeance on his father, but when he reached him, it was too late. Haverton must have been there first, for his father was just a withered husk. There was a scream from down the hallway at his mother’s room.

Haverton hovered over her, and with barely a glance, Rickard was sent flying through a wall and into the darkness of unconsciousness. When he came to, the house was empty, Haverton was no where to be seen, and his parents were both no more.

In the weeks that followed, Rickard covered the event up. As far as everyone knew, his father had been murdered defending his mother from a burglar. Rickard made use of his mark to keep up relations with House Cannith, looking into problems that arose that no one else could figure out. He began to make quite a name for himself, making a business out of solving mysterious issues and finding missing people.

Over the years he has not given up looking for his treacherous tutor. The darkness whispers of him, but has yet to give him up to Rickard. There will be a day of reckoning.
